September 2017 - Town Hall - S. Victor Fleischer

Thursday, September 21st - 7:30 pm

Program: “People, Places, and Products: The Goodyear Photograph Collection at The University of Akron” by S. Victor Fleischer

Dinner - 6:15 pm ($21.00); Program - 7:30 pm

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company started in a small shop in Akron in 1898, but in two short decades grew into the largest tire and rubber manufacturer in the world. In addition to tires, tubes and rims for almost every mode of transportation on the planet, the company manufactured lighter-than-air ships, molded goods, industrial products, war and defense materials and thousands of other rubber items that helped build the country and defend the nation. This fascinating history is captured in approximately half a million images valued at over one million dollars and dating from the founding of the company to the present time.

S. Victor Fleischer, University Archivist, Head of Archival Services and tenured Associate Professor of Bibliography at The University of Akron will take us on a photographic journey through the first 50 years of Goodyear’s phenomenal growth. His forthcoming book, tentatively titled “Rubber Through the Lens: A Photographic History of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, 1898-1948” is scheduled to be released by The University of Akron Press in the spring of 2018.

We are sure you will not want to miss this opportunity to spend an informative and insightful evening with S. Victor Fleischer. Join us for a delicious dinner of Swiss Steak and Apple Pie. The six-program series cost is $40.00 or $10.00 for a single program. Please call the Club to make dinner reservations. Dinner reservations need to be made before Tuesday, September 19th. All Town Hall Series programs and meals are open to the public.
